ABSTRACT

Food based Biofuels have made a useful contribution to reducing emissions in the past but as percentages increase, there is a price to be paid in reduced efficiency; so, ideally, we only use wastes as feedstock for biofuels, edible grains or oil seeds. Transport has no exclusive “right” to use hydrogen; indeed, operators are often at the end of the queue for any new greener fuel – despite pandemics showing us the importance of trucks. Whilst refuelling infrastructure may be out of scope for an audit, we can recommend an opportunity for improvement in fuel, powertrain choice without checking if the fuel is available locally, along the routes used by the audited fleet. First generation biofuels for transport were often made from food grade feed stocks, i.e., using them drove up food prices around the world. The Arab spring and other events were attributed to some extent to increasing food prices.
