ABSTRACT

This chapter examines US–China competition over the Blue Economy in several dimensions, including in terms of developing and defining the Blue Economy concept and the competition over developing domestic Blue Economies, as well as in terms of exporting these approaches to developing Blue Economies elsewhere. A case study on how the United States and China have employed the Blue Economy concept in relations with the Solomon Islands provides context for this competition. The chapter introduces the notion of a “Great Blue Game” brewing between the United States and China and how this competition has consequences for how the Blue Economy will either aid or slow US and PRC maritime development and impact the Indo-Pacific region.
