ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the evidence indicating risks to pregnancy from inhalant anesthesia exposure and the limitations of these studies. The advances in anesthetic scavenging and its effects on improved safety are discussed. Recommended exposure limits for inhalant anesthesia are included, along with best practices to limit exposure to pregnant individuals and to staff in general. Ways to reduce exposure include avoidance, engineering controls, administrative and work practice controls, and personal protective equipment. Practice profiles detail the experiences of a veterinarian and a veterinary technician with anesthesia exposure during their pregnancies.
