ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews ways to announce pregnancy at work and work-related legal protections for pregnant people in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, and other countries. Steps to take if discrimination is experienced are covered for the aforementioned countries. The benefits of announcing pregnancy early to provide better protection for the individual and the pregnancy are reviewed. Guidance is offered on appropriate responses from employers and coworkers when they receive news of a pregnant employee. Practice profiles highlight two veterinarians’ experiences announcing their pregnancies to their employers and how the employer response made a huge difference in their overall pregnancy experience.
