ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with an introduction to camels following their classification, with a description of their biological features. This chapter also describes various species of camel presently found in the world. It also explains how camels originated and how they passed through different evolutionary stages until the modern camel evolved. Furthermore, how and when camels were domesticated is also covered in this chapter. Reproduction in camels, the period of lactation, and how all and sundry can benefit from its milk are also described. How camels relate phylogenetically to other animals and their relationship with human beings are also described. The genetics of camels is introduced. Like other livestock, they are also prone to predation; hence, their important predators, preventing their predation, and control measures for predators are described in detail.
