ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces important species of camels with a brief on their biology. Then the distribution of various species of camels at the global level is described with statistical data regarding their prevalence. Gaps in the study of their distribution and the lack of data on their statistics are provided. Then various local strains and breeds found in all the important characteristics are described in detail. Important strains found in Pakistan are Bagri (Booja), Brela (Thalocha), Campbelpuri, Brahvi, Kachhi, Kharani, Dhatti, Kharai, Sakrai, Ghulmani, Khader, Maya, and Gaddi. At the end, this chapter provides brief information on the crossbreeding of various camel species in different countries of the world and specifically in Turkey. Production success and fertility levels of the hybrids produced are also discussed in detail.
