ABSTRACT

This chapter starts with a description of nutrients and nutrition specifically with reference to camels. All the macro- and micronutrients required for camels are described in detail. Then the feeding habits of camels in their natural environment are described in detail. Nutritional requirements for each state and category of camel are described at length. Variations in the nutrient requirements of breeders and pregnant and lactating females are explicitly described. Suggestions have also been provided for improving camel nutrition and their ultimate meat and milk production. Following to this, the anatomy of digestive system of camel is explained in detail, and how it compares with other livestock is also explained. Nutritional physiology and nutrients’ role in the physiological functioning of camels are covered in detail. The role of the hump in the daily performance and environmental adaptations is also covered for the interest of the reader.
