ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the percentage of prevalence of various species of camel all over the world including Pakistan. In Pakistan, the province of Baluchistan hosts the majority of camels; Punjab province is second in camel population while the least number of camels is found in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Camels are a source of meat and milk. Combined together, these two products are the main source of food and living for poor rural populations. Africa, having the largest camel population, is a major producer of meat, and Asia is second. Similarly, overall milk production is higher in Africa than in other continents. Nonetheless, the production of milk and meat per head is far higher in Asia than in African. Other than drinking purposes, a variety of cosmetics are also prepared from camel milk. Other than these commodities, camel hair/wool is used for preparing coats, caps, and mufflers. Camel skin is used to prepare handbags, belts, lamp shades, and a variety of other products. Bones are used for making crafts, tasbih, and chess sets.
