ABSTRACT

In a culture somewhat preoccupied with solutions, the idea of deliberating over a research problem may seem heretical to some. Alas, most of the research is inadequate because it doesn’t move knowledge forward. It’s very tempting—especially if timelines are short—to simply take brief from the initial kick-off meeting, or from a Request for Proposal (RFP) and assume the people have learned all there is to know about a project. Most of the phenomena that UX researchers are likely to study are constructs. UX research can require a sizable investment in time and costs. The myth isn’t due to problems with the original research, but in the way the research has been interpreted. The difference between human-moderated and computer-moderated tests is that human-moderated tests need an administrator to guide the participant through the test.
