ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some of the key principles of design elements that are applicable in almost all aspects. It identifies that a universal design provides comfort, accessibility, adaptability and flexibility which helps improve social sustainability. The Storytelling format introduces the events in a design process as characters and then describes the processes in which the events forge ahead leading to a common goal or consensus. A designer should always adhere to the Principle of Simplicity. It states that given a choice among many and different designs available which are all functionally equivalent, the simplest design should always be chosen. Any design process or product developed cannot be optimally designed for all. But if it meets the requirements of the majority, then the design is said to adhere to Satisficing principle. By using design thinking approach, one can make decisions based on what users want instead of relying only on previous data or non-scientific principles based on instinct instead of evidence.
