ABSTRACT

A walking stick is quite an important and essential tool, which also connects emotionally to an elderly in India. This chapter considers the walk-through in the re-design of the products as case studies which is an outcome of two courses, namely Science in design and Design and Technology. Thus, students from both design and electronics department can participate in experimental validations. The first step to the redesign of the walking stick deals with the collection of relevant anthropometric data. The collected data is statistically studied to know dimensional variations of 159 people. Tools like error, percentiles, mean and standard deviation are used to interpret them statistically. Among the various anthropometry parameters, four parameters are measured from the elderly, which are used to re-design the walking stick, namely gluteal furrow, hand breadth without thumb, at metacarpal, grip inside diameter, maximum and fingertip depth.
