ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the state of the construction industry (CI) and the introduction of sustainable development concepts into the sector. For ease of adoption, integration, and implementation, the principles of sustainability in construction are presented. The presentation of these principles is necessary to create necessary awareness among relevant stakeholders to ensure an effective collaborative effort towards realising the sustainability agenda of the CI. The various sustainable construction practices and trends in use to achieve the sustainability goals of the built environment are also highlighted. The chapter also discussed a selected few of these sustainable trends and practices for a comprehensive understanding of the benefits they offer when adopted and implemented. Finally, the chapter presents and discusses some trends and practices that emanated from the fourth industrial revolution and have become an effective technological tool for advancing the sustainability agenda of the built environment.
