ABSTRACT

The function of a connection is to transmit co-existent forces and moments between members at the joints, or 'node' points. Connections are usually categorized as pinned or fixed, depending on their ability to transmit moments. End connections of a member influence the effective length assumed for the member design. Bolts are used to join two or more separate plates, resisting shear at the plate interface and tension in the bolt axis. Assembly and tightening of High-strength friction grip bolting (HSFG) bolts must follow a set procedure in order to guarantee their effectiveness. The choice of weld type depends on the required strength of connection, weld location and comparative cost. Bolted tension connections should generally be designed for plate bending. Bracing normally consists of a single member with two or more bolts at each end connecting the member to a plate. Dimensional tolerance on the setting out of adjacent braces parallel to the chord must be within 5 mm.
