ABSTRACT

Over the years, dermatologists have tended to look upon vulva and vagina as the exclusive domain of gynecologists who were equally uninformed about dermatology. It is only in recent times that dermatologists and gynecologists have formed an increasing partnership leading to the rationalization of diagnosis, classification, investigation and treatment in this area. The Basement Membrane Zone provides cohesion between the epidermis and dermis and allows transfer of tissue fluid upward into the epidermis. Clinical dermatology is the interpretation of the macroscopic pathology of the skin. Both the epidermis and the dermis can only react in a limited number of ways. Acute edema (spongiosis) in acute dermatitis will be one of the causes of blisters. Genetic disorders of keratinization, such as the various types of ichthyosis, will lead to scaly skin. Peri-orificial dermatitis, skin atrophy and striae are complications of long term usage of topical steroids and are directly proportional to the potency of the steroid used.
