ABSTRACT

Until the summer of 1995, provisions of the federal respiratory protection regulations given in 29 CFR 1910.134 require that respirators provided by employers to employees for their protection against inhalation of hazardous atmospheres in workplaces be those which have been tested, certified, and approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) of the U.S. Department of Labor. The program of testing, certifying, respirators by NIOSH and MSHA is carried out under the authority of Part 1 1 of Title 30 of the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR 1 1). Since 1995 this task has been relegated to NIOSH alone.
