ABSTRACT

The fit test requirement prescribed by the Bureau of Mines (BM) respirator test and certification schedules, 30 CFR 11, was retained in the 1972 revision of the regulations when NIOSH took over the BM program. 1 Since the fit test requirement is vague and nonspecific, NIOSH requested the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL) to develop detailed anthropometric specifications to replace the requirements in the 30 CFR 11. An anthropometrically selected test panel would be useful for NIOSH to certify respirators, for other governmental agencies to evaluate devices that lack NIOSH certification, and for respirator manufacturers to design facepieces.
