ABSTRACT

2-Chloroethyl vinyl ether is a synthetic organic chemical, designated as a priority pollutant by the USEPA, that is no longer produced commercially in the United States. If released to soil, 2 chloroethyl vinyl ether is expected to leach readily. 2-Chloroethyl vinyl ether is an anthropogenic compound, and is not known to exist as a natural product. 2-Chloroethyl vinyl ether gave a 76% and 52% theoretical biological oxygen demand in seven days using a settled domestic wastewater as a microbial inoculum. Based on the log octanol/water partition coefficient and the water solubility, BCF values in the range 3-5 can be calculated for 2-chloroethyl vinyl ether, suggesting that bioconcentration in aquatic organisms should not be an important fate process. 2-Chloroethyl vinyl ether is no longer produced industrially in the USA, and there are no known current routes of exposure to the general population.
