ABSTRACT

5-Methyl-2-hexanone could potentially be released to the environment in waste emissions generated at commercial manufacturing and use sites. Its use as a solvent can release it directly to the atmosphere via evaporation. It could also be released in leachates and air emissions from landfills where wastes containing 5-methyl-2-hexanone have been disposed. 5-Methyl-2-hexanone could potentially be released to the environment in emissions from the one facility which manufactures this compound in the USA, from its use as a solvent for nitrocellulose, cellulose acetate butyrate, acrylics, and vinyl copolymers, during transport, during storage, and from sites where wastes containing this compound have been landfilled. The general population could potentially be exposed to 5-methyl-2-hexanone by inhalation of volatile flavor components and ingestion of certain foods, such as roasted filberts and fried bacon, which contain this compound.
