ABSTRACT

Pie charts may be used, for example, to show the proportions of different age groups within a single population, or the number of respondents to a questionnaire who answered ‘yes’, ‘no’ and ‘don’t know’. Generally speaking, pie charts become hard to understand when there are more than about seven slices in the pie. To emphasise a particular value, presenters can cut a slice out of the pie using PowerPoint’s pie chart functions, or use a strong colour. Usually, text labels are too large to fit neatly inside all the slices of the pie, so put them on the outside, arranged next to the relevant slice. If presenters think it would be useful for the audience, they can give percentages actually on the graph - they can go next to the labels, or if the slices are big enough, they can go within the slices with the data labels on the outside.
