ABSTRACT

One cannot arrive at explanations without using one's own personal judgement and this is inevitably subjective. A subjective treatment is usually far more stimulating than a coldly objective one because it has a greater heuristic value. Africa is another Gondwana fragment, another plate centre, where granite and granite-derived materials are the dominant bedrock, topography is for the most part gentle, whereas volcanism and seismicity are at a minimum, apart from the East African Rift and the Cameroon area. The correlation between process and the resulting soil materials in the Sudan and central New South Wales was possible because in both cases stratigraphic methods were used to achieve lateral correlation of soil layers across a landscape. The recognition of hillslope erosion as an integral part of pedogenesis immediately created a paradox, for the original catena concept dealt with differences in drainage conditions within profiles, which could be melded into the zonal, profile-restricted model with ease.
