ABSTRACT

Any adequate account of scientific method must include a theory of incentive or special motive: must contain a canon to restrict observation to something less than the whole universe of observables. The soils studied are derived from a transported material similar to the underlying altered in situ saprolite. The material appears locally transported; however, it is probably a mixture of several materials, in varying proportions from different sources and is not recognizable and traceable because of its highly weathered condition. How many pedological cycles the material underwent prior to its last deposition and how this could affect the present soil derived from it is a matter of speculation. In considering the continental plate centres of northern Laurasia in both Eurasia and North America, account has to be taken of a fundamental change of conditions compared to those that occur at the other plate centres, for there are large areas where temperatures are below 0°C and the ground is frozen.
