ABSTRACT
Computer systems operate on digital data. They can communicate with other digital equipment over a local area network (LAN). A LAN is defined as a collection of computers within a single office or building that connect to a common electronic connection - commonly known as a network backbone. A LAN can be connected to other networks either directly or through a wide area network (WAN), as illustrated in Figure 27.1.
