ABSTRACT

As the pandemic continued, there was some discussion of animals that were in close contact with people, such as companion animals. However, many other animals are cared for by humans, either being housed in zoos around the world or being protected in conservation areas. Furthermore, much conservation of our ecology involves monitoring and protecting animals from human action, such as encroachment and poaching. Did the COVID-19 pandemic have an impact on how humans managed animal conservation? There were some reports of animals being infected and even dying in zoos, particularly affecting big cats. One of the biggest effects was the lack of financial income and support for institutes that either kept animals in captivity or protected them in the wild. As with most aspects of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on animals, the full impact will never be known, but here many aspects of what was known are discussed, along with a look to the future.
