ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic had numerous consequences for animals and their welfare. Many were infected and several died, whilst other actions such as careless use of PPE had indirect effects. This chapter sums up many of these issues. The chapter also looks to the future. Long Covid appears to be one legacy of the pandemic. However, COVID-19 is very unlikely to be the last epidemic. Avian influenza and Mpox are both of some concern. Both involve animals and both may have the potential to have significant impacts on human populations. With the view that we need to be prepared for another epidemic/pandemic, this chapter looks to what we may do better in the future. With a further look at the One World/One Medicine policies, there is also a brief look at how plants were affected, as well as some discussion of some of the ethical issues raised by the COVID-19 pandemic.
