ABSTRACT

The Water Industry Act 1991 allows the Water Services Regulation Authority to set rules about the charges that a water and/or wastewater company can impose on its customers and on a water supply and/or sewerage licensee. Most customers in England and Wales currently receive their water and sewerage services from one of 22 appointed ‘water’ and ‘sewerage and water only’ suppliers that were in existence when the sectors were privatized. The Water Industry Act 1991 places a number of duties on statutory ‘water only’ and ‘water and sewerage’ companies in providing or enabling new connections for an individual property or development site. Water Industry Registration Scheme plays an important part in supporting and expanding the self-lay market, as it promotes and ensures compliance with the highest standards of water infrastructure installation and the essential protection and maintenance of water quality.
