ABSTRACT

The importance of biomass as a raw material source for SAF is underestimated: Feedstocks must be certified and are subject to strict regulations. A life cycle analysis must be performed to demonstrate the benefits of the raw materials compared to fossil alternatives. In addition, as of 2012, intra-European air traffic will be subject to EU emissions trading and will have to offset its CO2 emissions by purchasing certificates. As of 2027, all international flights will participate in the ICAO carbon offsetting programme “CORSIA”. Offsetting emissions through allowances is possible, but avoiding emissions through SAF is the more sensible solution in the long run. Governments are pushing SAF, but the long-term impact of political influence is not yet clear.
