ABSTRACT

The purpose of Domain Rules Analysis is to provide a practical method to clearly define and focus on an entire domain as the problem space, rather than a single application within the domain. The emphasis is on defining the problem space before moving to the solution space. To achieve this emphasis, Domain Rules Analysis considers three sources of Domain Rules: primary, supplemental, and other. Primary and supplemental sources are almost entirely about the problem space. For example, a primary source would be an official or formal definition of the domain (such as AIS or C4ISR; Figures 7.1 and 7.2), provided by a trade group, a major user, or academia. An example of a supplemental source would be the equivalent, but only for a subdomain (such as Purchasing or Battle Management). Other sources, such as an RFP or internal request, would likely include considerable solution-oriented information. Examples from all three sources are covered more extensively in [58].
