ABSTRACT
This preliminary chapter reviews basic concepts related to monoidal categories, enriched categories, and 2-categories. It recalls the symmetric monoidal closed structure on a diagram category when the domain category and the codomain category have the relevant structure. Due to its importance in later chapters, the special case where the codomain is the category of small categories is explained further.
