ABSTRACT

The liver is a critical organ that carries out many functions. It is referred to as the metabolic factory of the body. The liver function test routinely assesses the functioning of liver. Bilirubin is the breakdown product of hemoglobin present in RBCs, from its heme part. It is produced in the reticuloendothelial system present in the spleen and liver. This bilirubin is unconjugated and insoluble in water. Unconjugated bilirubin gets bind to albumin and then it is taken up by liver through carrier-mediated process. The secretion of conjugated bilirubin in bile throughout the biliary canalicular membrane is rate limiting and is sensitive to liver damage. Bile is saved in the gall bladder from where it passes into the duodenum through the cystic and common bile duct. Blood contains a larger number of proteins that perform so many functions. Most enzymes, hormones, and clotting factor are proteins in nature.
