ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role of the game designer, specifically, the way in which the game designer functions as an “advocate for the player” in the design process. The game designer envisions how a game will work during play. They create the objectives, rules, and procedures; think up the dramatic premise; and are responsible for planning all the aspects of the design that produces a compelling player experience. The chapter covers the core passions and skills of a game designer, including communication, teamwork, process, inspiration, and becoming a better player. Additionally, the chapter introduces the playcentric design process that is the foundational concept of the book, including setting player experience goals, prototyping, playtesting, and iteration.
