ABSTRACT

Divine services (that is, the Eucharistic mass, morning and evening prayers) as well as various paraliturgical and extra-liturgical events in different churches of the Pacific Northwest occur in a fairly diverse (traditional, modern, local, or mixed) form. Depending on, and sometimes irrespective of, the rank of a particular church, cathedrals and parish churches throughout British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon represent vastly different musical frameworks and practices. Below we turn to the palette of regional church music, looking at the weekly Eucharistic services, other divine services, festivals of church music, concerts, and a variety of community gatherings accompanied by singing.
