ABSTRACT

The steering system is the key subsystem of a vehicle, and it directly affects vehicle handling stability, comfort and active safety performance. The steering systems of vehicles have evolved from mechanical steering, hydraulic power steering (HPS), and electric hydraulic power steering (EHPS) to electric power steering (EPS). The history and category of steering systems are introduced in this chapter. With the development of electronic control technology, the steer-by-wire (SBW) system, which is derived from aerospace technology, has initiated replacing mechanical and hydraulic parts, when possible, on vehicles. The key technologies of SBW are discussed in this chapter.
