ABSTRACT

Women’s health covers a range of conditions; we have focused here on those most common and relevant to minor illness. We take you through the important skill of taking a thorough sexual history, highlighting symptoms that are more concerning and require referral.

Vaginal discharge is common. Here, we discuss how to differentiate between Candida and bacterial vaginosis and treat appropriately. Heavy periods, painful periods and intermenstrual bleeding are three menstrual problems we explore in this chapter. Most cases can be self-managed with appropriate advice, but it is essential to identify red flags requiring prompt action. We provide insight into situations when oral contraception may be less effective and cover how to manage an emergency contraception scenario. Mastitis and nipple pain are two breast conditions which are also covered in this chapter.
