ABSTRACT

Though not minor illness, mental health problems are very common, with one in four adults experiencing at least one diagnosable mental health problem every year. In this chapter, we cover some of the mental health conditions which present most frequently, including depression and anxiety. We explain how these may present with physical symptoms and also exacerbate the physical symptoms associated with other conditions. We also describe an approach to assessment and supportive management. Later in the chapter we provide an overview of suggested approaches to two related presentations, hyperventilation and insomnia, with particular focus on the non-pharmacological elements of management.
