ABSTRACT

Musculoskeletal conditions account for an estimated 20% of consultations in General Practice. This chapter starts with an overview of considerations for the pharmacological management of acute pain, before highlighting key differences in how chronic pain should be approached. We then set out approaches for the assessment and management of back pain, sprains and strains and joint pains, covering the most common presentations and conditions. We navigate the key factors in assessing someone after a road traffic collision and then move onto the important elements of assessment following head injury, in particular highlighting red flags. The final sections of the chapters relate to other conditions associated with injury, such as burns, bites (human, animal, insect) and cuts/wounds.
