ABSTRACT
To successfully combat friction and wear, a lubricant film must be present at all times between the mating bearing surfaces. The degree of protection, and subsequent bearing surface life, is directly relevant to the lubricant’s working film thickness, load, speed, and lubricant viscosity The minimum working film thickness required to achieve full surface separation is also known as the Lambda—λ thickness ratio.
