ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with analysis and design of very simple rotor models. Most rotor systems have single disc with massless flexible shafts with different boundary conditions. Mainly, the transverse free and forced vibrations have been addressed. One of the important considerations in the design of a rotor system is the critical speed, and this chapter deals with it for a variety of rotor configurations. Very few problems in this chapter deal with flexible bearing effect, however, with the rigid shaft. Although the most important effect (for gyroscopic effects) is not considered in this chapter, the examples in this chapter will open up to the reader to tackle the complexity that can be present in more intricate rotor systems. Plenty of MCQs helps in clearing small but critical concepts. In describing such MCQs, it is important to present a holistic picture of the problem at hand so that the reader can attempt any other variant of these MCQs with ease.
