ABSTRACT

Olive is very widely grown in different parts of the world, covering an area of 10 million hectares. Different cultivars of olive are reported to have different pollination requirements. The process of pollination in olive is complicated by the small size of the flowers and scanty pollen production in many cultivars, which often lead to an inadequate pollination, and consequently, an exceptionally higher intensity of flower abscission is noticed soon after full bloom. It is therefore imperative to understand various processes that are related to pollination and fruit set.
