ABSTRACT

Safflower is a minor oilseed crop, often neglected and very much underutilized. Safflower is a predominantly self-pollinating crop. Safflower cultivars vary in their degree of self-fertility and the degree to which they are self-pollinated. However, depending on the genetics and environmental conditions, outcrossing may be considerable. A diversity of bees, as well as other insects, are attracted to safflower pollen and nectar and thus contribute to outcrossing. Pollination has been reported to increase yield; however, under different environmental conditions, the benefits from pollinators may vary.
