ABSTRACT

Housing affordability is a policy concern, as households burdened with high housing expenditures may have fewer resources left to pay for food, utilities, health and child care expenditures, transportation to work, emergencies, retirement, and professional opportunities, such as pursuing higher education or starting a business. This chapter discusses recent reasons for housing affordability challenges, focusing on the supply and the demand side, affordability measurements, as well as offering ideas about addressing housing affordability.
