The destructive nematode diseases are posing a formidable challenge in the successful cultivation of crop plants. The enormous losses caused by these enemies of farmers have drawn the attention of agriculturists and policy makers. Soil solarization can be used to control many species of nematodes including lesion, root-knot, reniform, cyst, sting, ring, stubby root and dagger nematodes in different crops. The effect of soil solarization on earth worms has not received much attention, but it is thought that they retreat to lower depths and escape the effects of soil heating. Plants often grow faster and produce both higher and better-quality yields when grown in solarized soil.
