ABSTRACT

A chassis is what hosts the system. It is a sheet metal box with PCBs and other things inside it. The system is the working arrangement of everything inside the chassis, including boards (hardware), mechanical design, software, and FPGA logic. It is usually designed by a cross-functional team that is led by system engineering or management or by hardware engineering. The functionality is actually done in software, and the hardware design provides the platform for it. The cross-functional team consists of hardware design engineers (electrical), mechanical, power supply, software, FPGA logic and systems engineering, and program management.

Different industries with different processing and communication needs usually have settled on different sizes and types of systems and chassis. Many systems can be mounted into 19” (or 21”) wide data center racks.
