ABSTRACT

Quarantine periods for plants that are held in isolation for examination either before they reach their final destination or after they have already arrived are called intermediate quarantine and post entry quarantine, respectively. In order to minimize the health risk of plants it is necessary to establish an appropriate phytosanitary legislation. There are number of plant quarantine methods which are used separately or collectively to prevent or retard the introduction and establishment of exotic pests and pathogens. Plant protection and health are the major aims of quarantine and help in formulating and implementing of quarantine procedures and regulations. Plant Quarantine regulatory measures are operative through the ‘Destructive Insects & Pests Act, 1914 (Act 2 of 1914) in the country. Development of an integrated Export Phytosanitary Certification system to harmonize the on-going phytosanitary certification among Central/State Government authorities and other agencies to ensure that valid and credible phytosanitary certificates are issued to meet the international agreements.
