ABSTRACT

The Acquisition through Creative Teaching Approach, like other acquisition-focused approaches, minimizes direct correction of student errors in speaking. Just as parents do not insist on error-free production as children begin to speak, but rather show delight and affirmation as language communication begins to emerge–so the Acquisition through Creative Teaching teacher positively supports and encourages all student speaking attempts. Just as occurs unconsciously in normal child language acquisition, the “pattern-maker” within the brain draws inferences and learns language rules gradually and naturally. In addition, students are assigned a moderate amount of grammar study and practice exercises at home using the auxiliary text used in the course, without a demand for active mastery. The role of homework is an emotionally charged issue for many teachers as well as students.
