ABSTRACT
The thoracic cavity is divided into right and left pleural cavities by the central mediastinum. The mediastinum is bounded behind by the vertebral column and in front by the sternum; it extends from the diaphragm below to become continuous above with the structures in the root of the neck. It contains the heart, great vessels, oesophagus, trachea and lymphatics.
