ABSTRACT

SUPERFICIAL FASCIA The superficial fascia, a fatty layer between the skin and the deep fascia, contains the platysma muscle beneath which lie the external jugular veins and tributaries (Fig. 22.1). The platysma is a broad sheet of muscle extending over the pectoral muscles and the lower border of the mandible, where it blends with the facial muscles. The deep fascia is complex and consists of the investing layer of cervical fascia, prevertebral and pretracheal fascia and the carotid sheath.
