ABSTRACT

The world is recognizing that cost containment is the highest priority for the healthcare system. However, healthcare providers face a dilemma in attempting to ensure that patients receive the highest quality care while containing healthcare costs. Maintaining the status quo is no longer viable. Identifying key stakeholders and true leaders in clinical and information technology and obtaining their acceptance of and commitment to the framework is the next step. This team can help institute the specific attitudes and practices necessary to launch the change initiative. Leaders must understand the trade-offs in healthcare and be confident in communicating them to other team members. One initiative that could help in accomplishing the vision is to build a center of excellence for the efficient deployment of capital. Obstacles to change can come from people, processes, and organizational structures. These obstacles must be addressed to avoid the negative forces from moving forward.
