ABSTRACT
It is reasonable to begin a book on predictive control methods with the simplest approaches. Readers will appreciate that if a simple approach is good enough, then industry would generally prefer that to a more complicated and expensive alternative because simple implementations are easier and cheaper to install and maintain. The small losses in potential loop performance are regained through savings in down-time, upfront expenditure and so forth. Thus this chapter focuses on predictive functional control (PFC).
