ABSTRACT
Continuum mechanics concepts are used throughout this textbook. To help the reader in concentrating on the biomechanical aspects of the presentation, a number of algebraic, tensor and differential relations have been gathered in this chapter. The exposition is necessarily compact. Broader and thorough introductions to the field and constitutive equations of continuum mechanics may be found in classical textbooks, e.g., Fung [1965][1977], Mandel [1966], Malvern [1969], Bowen [1989] inter alii.
