To understand • The anatomy of the anus and anal canal and their relationship to surgical disease and its treatment • The pathology, clinical presentation, investigation, differential diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the anus and anal canal • That anal disease is common and its treatment tends to be conservative, although surgery may be required • That any damage to the anus, including too aggressive or inappropriate surgery, may render the patient permanently disabled
